Forest Park Hike

This past Saturday, the Newman Club went hiking at Forest Park which is the wildest and largest urban forest reserve in the United States. Luckily, our President was prepared with all the hiking essentials like florescent orange tape and a hunting hat. We had a great time hiking and talking our way to Pittock Mansion. On our way to the Mansion we stopped to pose for some pictures on a tree that was perfect for climbing. We also took a side trip through a Redwood Forest. Once we hiked all the way up to the Mansion we had a great view of The Fog. On our way back to the parking lot we saw a wild horse but it was a plastic toy. Before we left, we visited the beautiful Vietnam Memorial in Washington Park. All who went had a good time enjoying the beauty of God's nature and each other's fellowship.

Now, are you ready to go on a hiking adventure? It's your lucky day, the Newman Club will be hiking to Council Crest on Saturday the 17th. We will meet at St. Michael's parking lot at 10:30am. The hike is about 4 miles round trip. Bring a lunch, water, and dress warmly. Hope to see you there!

Catholic Jeopardy Challenge

This past Friday, Newman Club members enjoyed a pizza party, followed by a Catholic Jeopardy-style trivia game. The pizza was from Domino's Pizza, which I thought was very appropriate since Tom Monaghan, the founder of the company, was himself Catholic. After the pizza, we broke into teams to play "Catholic Jeopardy Challenge!", which was moderated by Chris, a seminarian.

After I had thoroughly embarrassed myself by missing several (OK, 4) questions in a row for my team, I think we realized that "Catholic Jeopardy Challenge!" was no "Catechism Board Game" (the "Catechism Board Game" is much easier).

I might add that the questions even proved challenging for those among us with more advanced theological education, as evidenced by this photo of Campus Minister Glenn conferring with team-mate Nick El-Hajj. On another note, it was a proud night for the RCIA program at St. Michael's, with candidate Patrick Sullivan's impressive performance.

The audience remained captivated throughout the night, with the game culminating with a winner's bracket lightning round, after which the title "Newman Center Supreme Catholic Jeopardy Trivia Challenge Winner" was awarded to the winning team-mates.

After the game, a large group of us remained at the Newman Center to play group party games.

Thank you to Chris and all who helped make the night a success!

Keep your calendars open that week and watch future e-mails for more information, or E-mail Glenn if you are interested.

Quote for the Week:
”Our single object and ambition was virtue, and a life of hope in the blessings that are to come; …We followed the guidance of God’s law and spurred each other on to virtue… Different men have different names, which they owe to their parents or to themselves, that is, to their own pursuits and achievements. But our great pursuit, the great name we wanted, was to be Christians, to be called Christians” (From a Sermon by Saint Gregory Nazianzen, bishop about he and his good friend Saint Basil the Great—joint feast day, Jan 2nd).
